Baby shower cookies are perfect for celebrating with new moms to be!
They make a great alternative to a cake and you can even send a some extras home with mom to keep the baby shower celebration ongoing!
Simple Sugar Cookie
I take my favorite sugar cookie recipe and use the perfect baby blue as the background for both the baby carriges and rattles. I like to add just a bit of orange extract to brighten up the cookies. The flavor is delicious.
A simple white royal icing is used to provide accent and it looks really nice against the blue background.
Pasteurized egg whites are what I like to use for the base of my royal icing. You can also use meringue powder as well. I like the way the eggs white give such a nice satin finish to the cookies. Since they are pasteurized, they are super safe to use.
Baking The Cookies
The dough is rolled out and cut with the cookies cutters and get a nice bake in the oven till just lightly golden on the edges. I like to cut them out a little thicker so the cookies are softer.
If you want a crispier cookie, cut them thinner and decrease your baking time as they will bake up faster.
Generally, I bake my cookies at 350.
My favorite sugar cookie recipe
- 1 stick unsalted butter
- 1 cup sugar
- 1 egg
- 1 tsp vanilla
- 1/2 tsp baking powder
- 1/4 tsp salt
- 2 cups flour
Cream the butter and sugar till fluffy, add the egg and vanilla and mix well. Add the flour, baking powder, and salt. Mix till a dough is formed. Put into a ball, place on plastic wrap and flatten into a disc. Refrigerate about 30 minutes.
Starting off, I make a batch of royal icing. I take some of the stiff icing out and reserve it for the white decorating of the cookies.
To the rest of the royal icing I color it baby blue and use additional water to get it to the right consistency for dipping the cookies. Much like maple syrup.
- Each cookie then gets a bath in the blue icing and allowed to dry completely on parchment paper.
- Next, I use some of the stiff royal icing I reserved and a wilton tip 2 to pipe on the accent designs of the carriage.
Baby Rattle Cookies
- For the rattle cookies, I put the rest of the blue icing I used from the carriage cookies and place in a piping bag with a wilton tip #3 and slowly pipe circles of blue on the top and bottom of the rattle.
- Cookies are given the time to dry about 20-30 minutes.
- I then take some of the reserved white royal icing and thin it with water to get it to a medium consistency, much like the same as the blue.
- White lines for the handle are then piped on the rattle and then are allowed to dry about 10 minutes.
- The bow is then piped.
- When the blue is completely dry I pipe on the white stiff royal icing to decorate both.
One great thing about these decorated cut outs is you can make them up in advance and freeze them.
Once they are completely dried, layer them in a freezable container separated by parchment paper. Seal and close container and freeze up to 3 months.
Once ready to serve. Lay cookies out on wax or parchment paper until they are fully thawed. They will be ready for any baby shower.
