Braided Cinnamon Breakfast Rolls

Braided Cinnamon Breakfast Rolls are new family favorites. I love the flavor of a sweet bread dough filled with butter, cinnamon and sugar. Delicious! Instead of the traditional roll, I wanted to bring a new twist to our favorite breakfast treat with a braided appearance and a smear filling I love so much.

Bread is such my passion right now; I just love getting my hands in some homemade bread dough. When it’s a sweeter version, I’m even more excited! I love reading different recipe books and watching videos and getting ideas to take basic bread recipes and turn them into something different and unique.

Cinnamon Rolls-First Impression

Looking back, I remember where I got my love of cinnamon rolls, Pillsbury! 🙂 I have to admit, they are really delicious and perfect for a quick oven to table version. And what is not to love about that icing, right?!

Cinnamon Benefits

Did you know there are so many benefits cinnamon offers? Known for its anti-inflammatory properties and antioxidant characteristics in helping our bodies to stay healthy and fight off infections. It even has anti-aging benefits. Every morning in my smoothies, I add a tsp of cinnamon to give me a great start to my day in a healthy way!

What Makes These Cinnamon Rolls Different?

These Braided Cinnamon Breakfast Rolls are different than the traditional ones by:

  • Made in a muffin tin
  • Braided instead of rolled and sliced
  • Dusted with powdered sugar instead of a glaze

Although they require a little more time to construct and braid, the end result is totally worth it.

Braided Dough

These yummy breakfast rolls start with a beautiful enriched sweet dough with butter. Super easy dough that comes together super easy. It’s the same dough used in my White Chocolate Raspberry Mascarpone Braid . Additionally, not only does it taste great, but also supe user friendly and elastic. You can get my recipe here. I like this enriched dough for a good cinnamon roll recipe, but you could also use a brioche recipe as well.

Let me show you the steps in getting the dough ready to bake:

Once the dough has risen, it gets the traditional “punch-down” and rolled out into a rectangle.

Next, the smear (filling-see below) is spread all over the dough and ready to fold. This smear can be used for many things, even cinnamon toast. Keep it in the fridge ready to use. A perfect cinnamon sugar butter.

preparing bread dough

Unlike a traditional cinnamon roll that is rolled and sliced into coins, this dough is folded like a letter.

Once the letter is folded, it is then cut into 1-1/1/4″ slices to form mini rectangle pieces.

Each rectangle is then sliced down vertically twice, leaving the top section unsliced creating three pieces that are ready for braiding.

The three sections are then braided to form a rope of dough with the smear filling exposed, very pretty.

Lastly, these are then rolled into a coil and placed in a greased muffin pan. I already love the way they look! I used this same technique with Cinnamon Braided Sugar Rolls. Differing slightly as the rolls were coiled and placed flat on a baking sheet compared to being placed into a muffin tin.

  • These are covered to rise till almost at the top of the muffin tin
  • Bathed in egg wash (1 egg with 1 T water)
  • Baked 375 till lightly golden brown

Cinnamon Breakfast Roll Filling

The filling is made by a “smear” which is softened butter combined with white and brown sugar, along with cinnamon, of course. Great way to add in those added health benefits cinnamon offers. This gets mixed together to form a paste which easily spreads on the dough once it is rolled out. Allowing the butter to sit out at room temperature makes this smear easier to combine.

Recipe:

  • 1 stick unsalted butter, softened at room temperature
  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar
  • 1 Tablespoon cinnamon

Combine all in a bowl and spread on the dough. Cover and refrigerate leftovers.

Final Touch

What I love about these rolls is they just get a final finish with a simple dusting of powdered sugar which makes them beautiful. No icing needed for these but I’m sure having one would make them delicious too!

These cinnamon delights have been perfect little addition to my breakfast smoothie. They make a perfect duo and a super breakfast roll!
