Heart Cookies-Valentine Strawberry

valentine pink and red cookies decorated

Heart cookies-Valentine strawberry is a perfect representation for the sweet holiday and definitely calls for special themed cookie to celebrate with. This year, I wanted to try a different technique using my two favorite Valentine colors of pink and red. Of course, hearts must be the focus, my favorite design for the signature holiday.

Super simple recipe makes these whimsical multicolored cookies easy to make in a flash. The recipe is a basic shortbread cookie recipe. No eggs required, making this a delicious and buttery cookie with a touch of strawberry emulsion flavoring. They melt in your mouth and the strawberry flavor just puts it over the top. Makes it perfect for the Valentine theme.

Here, I use a cookie cutter that has a plunger and even gives a bit of indentation when pressed simultaneously when cut. Makes a great mini heart inside the cookie in which to fill with chocolate….. if your “heart” desires. 🙂

Once the dough is made, it gets divided into two equal portions and colored pink and red. I use Wilton gel colors and add just a drop to get the desired color I like.

Dividing the dough is easy, I use my small kitchen scale on the grams setting to get a more exact reading to make sure each is equal in proportion.

Once they are rolled out and cut, you can gather the dough back and re-roll it for a different colored dough to give you a variety to the two-tone. Giving an assortment and variety of colors for perfectly themed decorated cookies.

Shaping Dough for Valentine Heart Cookies

  • Once the dough is colored, it gets divided into 6 pieces; three of each color
  • Each piece is rolled into a log
  • Each log is pressed together with alternating colors to form one rectangular piece of dough
  • Dough is rolled out to about 1/4″ thickness to make a striped cookie dough
  • Heart cutter is used to cut the cookies, giving a striped cookie of pink and red dough

Decorating Heart Cookies

There are really no boundaries here for decorating these two-tone cookies. Here are a few ideas:

  • Sprinkles
  • Vanilla almond bark or candy melts, heated and drizzled
  • Chocolate almond bark or candy melts, heated and drizzled
