We all love cinnamon rolls, its one of those things that just seem so traditional American don’t they? Move over cinnamon rolls, you have a sidekick, there is a new sheriff in town. Introducing the cookie bun, a fun play on the traditional cinnamon roll that creates a swirled sweet treat of goodness.
These delicious buns combine the best two things ever, puff pastry and chocolate chip cookie dough! Yum! The flakiness of the puff pastry and the ooey gooey chocolate chip cookie is a great sweet treat that’s both unique and melts in your mouth.
A little spin on these is I add some fresh orange zest to the cookie dough which gives these buns a lift of freshness. Orange and chocolate marry well together and I love the flavor combination it creates.
These are great served really anytime of the day. Breakfast, afternoon snack for the kids, or that late night craving for something sweet.
Also, they freeze after baking super well.
Chocolate Chip Cookie Buns
Puff pastry swirled with chocolate chip cookie dough for an awesome rolled treat.
Cream the butter with the sugars till creamy. Add the zest then the egg and vanilla and mix till creamy.
Add the flour, baking soda, and salt and mix well. Add the chocolate chips and mix till well combined. Set aside.
Remove both sheets of puff pastry from the package and place each on a floured surface. Allow the chill of the dough to come off but don't allow the dough to get warm.
Sprinkle a tiny bit of flour on top of each pastry sheet and gently roll out to expand the dough just a little.
Divide the cookie dough in half and place on top of each pastry sheet by placing sections and clumps of dough all over the pastry sheet.
Cover the cookie dough with saran wrap and with a rolling pin, roll the cookie dough gently and evenly till it covers the pastry sheet.
This is a great tip to make spreading the dough much easier and keeps your hands clean too.
Starting from the longer end, start rolling the dough up jellyroll fashion till the end. Roll till the seems are on the bottom.
Wrap each roll in saran wrap and refrigerate for 15 min to firm up for easy cutting.
Preheat oven to 375 and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
Remove the saran wrap for each dough and trim off each end. Slice into 10 slices.
Place the cookie buns on a baking sheet, you should get about 10 buns per pastry roll.
Bake for 15-18 minutes till the cookie gets lightly browned and the puff pastry is cooked through, will be browned on the bottom.
Remove and allow to cool.
Combine the icing ingredients and drizzle over the cooled rolls. If you put the icing on the hot or warm buns it will melt the icing. The icing will firm up and the buns will be ready to devour!
These are best prepared and eaten the day they are made.
You can also prepare both sheets of puff pastry with the cookie dough, then wrap one of the rolls well and freeze for later. Upon removal from the freezer, thaw, and slice and bake.
